1960 Morris Mini 850

Seen at the Classic Car & Restoration Show at the NEC in March 2023, the show has several focal points, but for many, the Footman James Barn Find stand is the one that resonates with visitors the most. Comprising of cars that have been recently discovered in long-term storage, I was instantly drawn to this 1960 Mini 850 saloon.

Discovered by owner Andy Longfield just a few miles from the NEC, the car is fitted with a Glass Fibre boot, sold and created by the enterprising Guildford-based LMB Components LTD. It was fitted to this Mini when new and uses the existing BMC trim. Inelegant would be the kindest word to describe it, but there’s no doubting its useful ability to swallow up luggage.

The car was last taxed in 1995, and Andy’s enthusiasm for the car encouraged the late owner’s family to sell it to him. However, as to be expected for an early Mini, it’s going to need a thorough restoration. It’s because of this, that he decided to use the event to promote the car’s sale, bagging the best car on the stand award in the process.

A potential dilemma for the next owner would be to restore the car as a standard 1960 850 or with its enlarged posterior. In terms of value and appeal, the former option would make sense but for those who like a little whimsy and notoriety, the option of sticking out from the usual early Mini crowd would be a valid option.
