The idea was simple enough, place a supercharger in a small popular car. When VW released the G40 Polo, it was one of seven distinctively different VWs gifted a G-Lader Supercharger option. When the G40 Polo was rolled out in 1991, there wasn’t anything like it in the European Supermini sector market, and the car was often compared to bigger competitors due to its performance and subsequent pricing.

Around 616 RHD cars were imported throughout its three-year production, but sales were slow, and once depreciation set in, it offered incredible value for not much more than a used Polo GT. The suspicion of a reputation of supercharger failure may have been the reason for its cool used reception, and many ended up neglected and were broken up.

This example was owned by Ed Perry, it has seen a reconditioned Supercharger and has been upgraded with G60 injectors. With over 180 invoices to suggest a charmed life, it was also sold with a stack of spare parts, new paint and reconditioned alloys. The car’s performance still impresses and its subtle demeanour will almost certainly surprise those who are unaware of the car’s ability. Being a VW, it’s well made and its interior design is typically restrained but the engine’s eager and punchy delivery makes up for it.
