The Audi Ur Quattro was the brainchild of Jörg Bensinger, an Audi chassis designer who was testing the military 4WD VW Iltis on snow when an idea hatched. Using the B2 Audi 80 as a development testbed, further evaluation and positive feedback fast-tracked the car into production in 1980.

Utilising a 2.1-litre Turbocharged engine with a permanent four-wheel drive system was a novelty in a family car, but its true measure of success soon came on the rally stages. Partially hand-built, around 11,500 were produced over its 11-year run and not only popularised 4WD as a marketing asset but established the brand as a producer of technically advanced cars.

This car was featured on Fifth Gear and was driven by Jason Plato as part of a comparison feature.
