1978 C2 Audi 100 GL 5E

The second-generation Audi 100 furthered Audi’s positive reputation for durability, thanks to the company’s progressive programme of upgrades. A well-liked design when new, it was competitive in both the premium family and executive sectors during its 6-year run.

What gave it a further unique selling point was the 5-cylinder engine, marketed to offer the smoothness of a six without the thirst. Audi had long deployed the FWD layout on its models, resulting in a roomy interior, impeccable motorway manners and comfort. In the UK, it is a curiously rare sight today, particularly compared to its Mercedes and BMW rivals, likely to have been a victim of depreciation and high insurance costs combined with the high price of parts.

This one, which had been owned by the same family for much of its life, was sold by CCA at their winter sale in 2022. Sold on behalf of a deceased estate, the Berkshire-based car appears to have last been used in 2004 and remained in storage since then. Complete and relatively solid with not much more than 27K on the clock, it released £3,663 at auction, which is something of a bargain for a solid and comfortable retro German cruiser.
